What is Waffle House?

Waffle House is a restaurant company in the United States with over 2,100 locations spread over 25 states. With over 1,200 stores, it has become a cultural institution in the South. The corporate headquarters of Waffle House may be found in Norcross, Georgia, located in the greater Atlanta metropolitan region.

Avondale Estates, Georgia, served as the location of the original Waffle House restaurant, which debuted during the Labor Day weekend in 1955. This eatery was the brainchild of pioneers Tom Forkner and Joe Rogers Sr.

Rogers began his career in the food industry as cook and then regional manager of a prominent restaurant chain. And he Tom Forkner when purchasing property from him in Avondale Estates after relocating.

Forkner created the name “Waffle House” since waffles were the most profitable dish on the 16-item menu. However, this confused customers about the restaurant’s other meal options.

Even after Rogers had sold his shareholding in Toddle House to Forkner in 1956, he kept working with the company. After the fourth outlet was opened in 1960, the company began to focus on expansion through franchising. By the late 1960s, Waffle House boasted some 27 locations in the US.

Returning to the original location, Waffle House repurchased the business in 2007, which had previously been a Chinese restaurant. To use it as a private business museum, the corporation used original designs to rebuild it.

Waffle House, Inc. purchased North Lake Foods, one of the largest Waffle House franchisees in the Southeast, in 2008. Some North Lake Foods outlets closed after the company filed for bankruptcy protection. Waffle House, Inc. intends to restore the franchise to its former glory.

Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner, the two men responsible for starting the Waffle House chain, both passed away in 2017, within a span of two months of one another.
